St John the Baptist Church, Dethick DE4 5GG
Please note the church is up a lane and along a track in the country. Park on the side of the main road. The driveway belongs to Church Farm, and the church has a right of way but no right of parking unless by permit.
Directions are given from the M1 J28 or the A6 at Cromford, but please use the above google map to find the best directions for you.
From the A6: Follow the A6 to Cromford. At the traffic lights at Cromford crossroads, take the turning towards Cromford station. This will be a right turn if you are coming from the south or a left turn if you are coming from the north. The road twists past Cromford Mills and over the River Derwent. Ignore the left turn past Willersley Castle and keep on the road following the river, for 2 miles in total from the A6. Take a left turn towards Lea, passing under the bridge of Smedley’s Factory at Lea Bridge. Continue up the hill for about 0.7 mile and fork left towards Riber. Follow the road round to the left and then take a right turn to Dethick. The church is about half a mile from this junction. Do not turn down the lane. Park on the main road.
From the M1: At Junction 28 of the M1, take the A38 towards Alfreton. At the second exit, turn right towards Alfreton (over the A38) and then almost immediately left onto the A615 towards Matlock. Keep left at the mini roundabout and after another mile you will reach a junction with traffic lights. Turn right and then left to continue on the A615. From this point it is 3.8 miles to a turn on your left signposted Dethick. This is Dethick Lane. Take care as there are two left turns close together and you want the second turning. From the A615, the church is about 1.2 miles on your left. Do not turn down the lane. Park on the main road.
The 141 bus runs between Matlock and Ripley. The 140 runs between Matlock and Alfreton, but the nearest bus stop at Common End, Lea is still a mile from the church. This bus stop is labelled ‘Lea Green’ on google maps but known as Common End locally and on timetables. The traveline website might be helpful. There is a bus shelter if you can arrange a lift from the bus stop.
The nearest stations are Cromford (on the Matlock to Derby line) and Alfreton (with connections to Nottingham, Chesterfield, Derby and London). The 140 and 141 buses stop at both these stations, but unfortunately the connections are not always well timed. The traveline website may be helpful. Taxis are easier to obtain at Alfreton or Matlock. From Cromford you are best to call ahead as it is more isolated.
The nearest Airport to Holloway is East Midlands. There is a train station at East Midlands Parkway which links with Derby and Nottingham.
