Mothers’ Union has been supporting families for 140 years.
From a simple parish meeting of 40 women in 1846, Mothers’ Union has grown to a fellowship of over four million members reaching out to their communities around the world. We are still connected by Mary Sumner’s founding principles of prayer, support and education, and the recognition that strong relationships and the role of the family are crucial in building healthy communities. But we have evolved a great deal over our 140 years, responding to the rapidly changing face of society.
With an emphasis on empowering women to lead within their communities, Mothers’ Union was amongst the first Anglican organisations working overseas to replace its project workers with women indigenous to the area in which they were working. Yet prayer will always remain at the heart of the organisation and, through all our programmes and campaign work , in the UK and overseas, we will continue to support families affected by poverty, homelessness, imprisonment relationship breakdown and prison sentences.
Mothers’ Union Prayer
We pray for families around the world.
Bless the work of the Mothers’ Union
as we seek to share your love
through the encouragement, strengthening
and support of marriage and family life.
Empowered by your Spirit,
may we be united in prayer and worship,
and in love and service
reach out as your hands across the world.
In Jesus’ name.
